God's intention of health - "shalom" - for the earth and its people, and Jesus' promise of abundant life - health, healing and restoration to wholeness in body, mind and spirit - are central dimensions of the faith we profess and the vocation to which we are called as Christians.
From a Christian perspective, health is much more than just NOT being sick. It is the understanding that wholeness comes from a right relationship with God, self, and others.
The Congregational Health Ministry of Second Presbyterian Church seeks to promote wholeness and healing in the congregation by encouraging stewardship of the gift of our bodies, and by ministering to congregation members in a holistic way.
Blood Pressure screenings performed by nurses are
available in the church office on the second Sunday of each month at 9:00, 10:00, and 11:30 a.m.
Health Education Seminars & Materials
Health education seminars are held periodically throughout the year, and may include such topics as CPR training, women's health issues, and advanced directives. Written materials that focus on the Monthly National Health Observances are available in the narthex of the church on the Health Ministry pamphlet rack.
Exercise Group
An exercise group meets Mondays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the Kindergarten Room for Chair Dancing & Toning. Chair Dancing is a seated exercise program that is appropriate for all ages. Babysitting is provided during the Thursday session.
Blood Drive
The CHM Committee coordinates the annual blood drive
of the Central Pa. Blood Bank. The blood drive is usually held in February of each year.
In addition to the above activities, the CHM Committee works in cooperation with other ministries of the church to bring care of the body, mind, and spirit to congregation members. Some ways in which Committee members may do this include:
Visitation of the sick, elderly, and shut-ins with a particular emphasis on integrating faith and health
Identifying non-medical needs of members that may be provided by the congregation (i.e. meals, transportation, etc.)
Assisting members and their families in decisions about care
Connecting members with local community resources to assist in managing health and life issues
Providing members with up-to-date health information and opportunities to learn about healthy lifestyle choices
Offering information on medical equipment available for loan
